The Changing Landscape
Public Housing Authorities do not receive sufficient federal funding to preserve their existing housing, let alone build more. The shortfall has existed for many years, and the resulting lack of maintenance has caused public housing to deteriorate in quality and decline in quantity. Without funding to repair, every Housing Director faces the dilemma of caring for his or her vulnerable residents without full resources to do so. Each year this quandary worsens, as properties age, and the backlog of deferred maintenance grows even greater.
The Opportunity
With thorough preparation and implementation, repositioning provides better homes and communities for public housing residents. At the start of a new administration, HUD’s support for repositioning will expand, as will new federal program opportunities.
